"Learn to trust in the kindness of life rather than living in fear of life's ferocity"
We live in a society where we are bombarded with the constant pressure to perform on a daily basis, at work, in the bedroom & in our relationships. The pressure to be something other than who we are can be completely overwhelming. There is no space for us. No space to breathe, no space to really connect to the slow fluid beauty of the present moment.
In the work of acting and creative performance more generally, we are acting as a channel for characters, images, feelings and expressions of life to be expressed through us. The question is are we relaxed in being ourselves? Do we really have the space inside to surrender to this act of channelling creative flow? Or are we pushing ourselves around and losing energy, trying to give a performance to impress others from a space of internal poverty?
It is my belief that an artist who is free to be themselves and who can consciously direct their performance from a space of deep relaxation and true being-ness will be empowered to sustain their capacity to perform over a much longer time and will be able to receive a lot of strength from the roles and energies that they are working with. Actors for instance who too often get identified in their roles, even though they may give award winning performances, will much less likely be able to sustain this over a longer time, repeated and chronic identification with your roles as actors is highly likely to result in burn out and an inability to sustain yourself professionally.
So the question is as an artist, how do I give without giving? How do I act without acting? Dance without dancing? How do I flow without spilling? How can I simply 'be' without 'doing'? What medicine is there to surrender to the state of allowing ourselves to be moved? Feeling safe and letting go of control, learning to trust in the kindness of life rather than living in fear of life's ferocity?
One of the answers to this question is Embodied Speaking. Embodied Speaking work offers a safe space to slow down, let go of any agenda to perform and simply be with one another, it is in the magic of this safe space that a space can be allowed to open up within us, out of which genuine truth and creative flow begins to flow again with much greater strength and consistency. Creative flow and feelings of well being happen naturally when we relax into being, relax into connection, slow down enough to be able to really start feeling ourselves in the body. Embodied Speaking work will help you to become more comfortable with who you really are and carve out a greater space inside of you so as your characters can more fluidly and powerfully take up residence within you and leave exactly when you ask them to. You can be the master of both your art and your life.
